Salviati, narrowly beaten by Ravishing last time out, as well as the admirably consistent Kathology, and Corridor Creeper, the mount of Tony Beech, all hold solid claims, but this is reflected in their odds. At the early prices, though, it is impossible to resist a horse who may not be the wild outsider his odds suggest, Jailhouse Rocket (next best 4.10).The reasons the boomakers have 40-1 (50-1 with William Hill) chalked up against him this morning include the fact that he is one of only three horses making their seasonal debut, as well as a rather disappointing end to his juvenile career, when it seemed that temperament might be getting the better of him.Yet he had looked a very promising sprinter in the first half of last season, has been gelded over the winter, and, best of all, is trained by Sir Mark Prescott. Prescott has yet to saddle a winner this year, drawing a blank from 12 runners, but few trainers place their horses more shrewdly, or have a better record when it comes to getting horses ready first time up. At 50-1, Jailhouse Rocket is certainly a very sporting each-way bet.Another seasonal debutant, TOUGH SPEED (3.35), showed enough last year to trouble Shibboleth, the probable favourite for the King Charles II Stakes, while Hot Tin Roof (Lingfield 3.20), Fire Dome (Lingfield 4.25) and Grimley Gale (Stratford 2.45) must also go well. The main event of the weekend, however, is tomorrow's Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) at Chantilly, although French-trained runners will be in a minority in the 14-runner field. Last year's Continental two-year-olds, particularly the colts, were a poor bunch, and following Bachir's victory in the French 2,000 Guineas, this may be another Classic which is ready for export.Bachir's stablemate Roscius will give a good account, while Ciro, from Aidan O'Brien's yard, has a clear form chance of winning the third French Group One race of his career.Kutub, narrowly beaten by Ciro in the Prix Lupin last time out, is the main hope of the home side, but the one to back may prove to be Holding Court. Though he started the season in a rated stakes, Michael Jarvis's colt has since won the Prix La Force, over today's 12-furlong trip, by an impressive three lengths.
Though he held an Epsom entry, he was supplemented for tomorrow's race at a cost of £25,000, and it should prove to be money well spent.. Sepp Blatter, the president of the game's world governing body, Fifa, yesterday said he has abandoned his plan to hold the World Cup every two years. Sepp Blatter, the president of the game's world governing body, Fifa, yesterday said he has abandoned his plan to hold the World Cup every two years. Blatter had been considering the proposal only to meet widespread opposition and admitted to "have put the idea into a safe I have lost the combination to that safe. Let it stay there in peace."Blatter was speaking in Malta where he was taking part in the country's centenary celebrations of their football association, which include today's friendly international against England. That has given the England side the opportunity to act as ambassadors for the campaign to host the 2006 World Cup, especially as Malta's Joseph Mifsud is one of the Fifa executive committee members who will decide on the winning bid.The England campaign team will welcome the fact that Blatter is no longer pursuing his known support for an African host country with unqualified vigour."I said that we should give the World Cup to Africa, but I have always said that would only be when and if an African candidate fulfilled all the technical, security and infrastructure requirements. That is a very important addition to what I have said before," Blatter said.Blatter, who vigorously opposed the concept of fences being reintroduced for games with a high security risk - as they were for the Uefa Cup final between Arsenal and Galata-saray - meanwhile confirmed that Fifa would pursue its plan to implement a co-ordinated international fixture calendar. This would set aside various dates for international games to help ease the growing tension between clubs and national sides, but it would not prevent the English season continuing to be played from August to May.Another agenda item at Fifa's summer congress meeting in Zürich is the thorny issue of possible restrictions on the number of overseas players appearing in club football.Blatter wants to press ahead to ensure a minimum of six home-grown players in each club's starting line-up, although it is clear that European law on freedom of trade is almost certain to prevent this happening..

The contents of an Australian athlete's mouth are helping organisers rid the Olympic Games of counterfeit merchandise, an industry worth an estimated A$30million (£11m). Ron Taylor, of the company DNA Technologies, said a DNA sample had been gently scraped with a cotton bud from the inside of an athlete's mouth and some unique segments of the sample had been wrapped in a protein coating resembling a miniature golf ball. This eventually became part of a special ink used on official products sold at Sydney 2000 Games."We just want to raise the public awareness to a higher level and make counterfeiters aware they're going to get caught if they become involved," Taylor said.Officials will be able to verify instantly with a hand-held scanner whether products are official or not. The technology has already been in place for three years, Taylor said. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the basic building block of humans.Taylor said Sydney Games merchandise was a A$100m industry, and without adequate checks on counterfeit material, both at venues and on the streets, fake souvenirs could generate up to A$30m for corrupt entrepreneurs. "We're hoping to cut that down to zero," Taylor said. The DNA tagging will make it virtually impossible for counterfeiters to imitate the merchandise, with up to 1.13 quadrillion possible variations of the code.
As for which Olympic athlete is donating a piece of themselves to the merchandise, Bonds clothing company said they will only release the name closer to the Games, which open on 15 September and run until 1 October.. An anti-rape group lost a legal challenge yesterday to Jack Straw's decision to allow the boxer Mike Tyson to return to Britain to fight. An anti-rape group lost a legal challenge yesterday to Jack Straw's decision to allow the boxer Mike Tyson to return to Britain to fight. The Court of Session in Edinburgh rejected an argument that the Home Secretary should have sought the views of people who opposed his entry before allowing his visit. The Glasgow-based Rape Crisis Centre claimed that Mr Straw should have consulted women's groups, after he met representatives of the former heavyweight world champion at the beginning of last month.Tyson, convicted of raping an 18-year-old beauty pageant contest in 1992, is due to fight his fellow American Lou Savarese in Glasgow on 24 June.Lawyers representing the fight promoter, Frank Warren, said cancellation of the bout would have disastrous consequences for local businesses. A total of 60,000 people are expected to attend the fight at Hampden Park.Susan O'Brien QC, for the anti-rape group, said Mr Straw's meeting with Tyson's representatives meant he should have approached other interested parties.Lord Clarke ruled that there was no ground for a review. A written judgment will follow.Sandy Brindley, development officer for the Rape Crisis Centre, said: "It was important to challenge what we saw as economic considerations being placed above the trauma experienced by women who suffer sexual violence."Women's groups angrily opposed Mr Straw's original decision in March to allow Tyson to enter the UK to fight Julius Francis in Manchester.Yesterday's court action to obtain a judicial review of the latest decision to grant the boxer a visa followed Mr Straw's assurances that the first visit was a "one-off"..
