Recber Rustu saved the fourth Croatian penalty, giving Turkey the qualifying ticket to the semi-finals where they are set to face Germany. The former Barcelona goalkeeper fully-stretched to the left corner of the goal to save the penalty, leading to a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win after the match ended 1-1 with both goals getting scored in the second half of extra-time.Euro 2008 is not the first competition that Rustu stars in. In World Cup 2002, Turkey finished third and Rustu was one of the stars of the team that 2002 World Cup champions Brazil struggled to beat twice (in the opener and the semi-finals of the cup). And with his heroic saves last night against Croatia that enabled Turkey to advance to the semi-finals in yet another international competition, Rustu has played very well.
However, it must be mentioned that the first goal that Turkey conceded was after a laughable act by our hero where Rustu left his goal and chased Luka Modric who was approximately on the edge of the penalty area; Modric crossed the ball and a Croatian head connected with the ball that went in the back of the net.Reports linking the shaky Turkish keeper for a move back to Barcelona might be taken seriously though (with Victor Valdes in goal, any other goalkeeper would seem as a good replacement). However, it is highly unlikely that he would be moving to Barca after a horrific period at the Nou Camp that made Barca proud to have Valdes between the posts. . He said in the post qualifying press conference, "It's quite disappointing. I have to apologise to the team because I didn't do a great job." The winner in Canada, Robert Kubica starts 7th following a disappointing qualifying session. His BMW Sauber team mate, Nick Heidfeld lines up in 11th place.. I feel that Kyle Busch made the right decision by not going out to Milwaukee this weekend to race in the Nationwide Series or the Trucks because the ultimate prize in NASCAR is the Sprint Cup.
At one point this season, he was either leading all three series or was in second place in the standings.Right now as it looks, Busch is still leading the Sprint Cup series by 32 points over Jeff Burton. In the Nationwide series, he is in fifth place trailing Clint Bowyer by 243 points. In the Craftman Truck series, he is in 13th place trailing Johnny Benson by 217 points.Even though he has made all the starts so far for the Nationwide Series, his main goal is to get that Sprint Cup and by going out to Milwaukee, racing in a series that he trails by 243 points in, Kyle Busch made the right decision by stay at Infineon this weekend.Busch will start in the 30th position tomorrow for the race at Infineon.. With a little over half an hour to go before the kick-off of the third quarterfinal game in Euro 2008, I couldn't be more excited. It seems to me that it is this type of match which typifies the tournament as a whole. This match pits the Dutch, who entered the tournament as a potential spoiler but not a serious threat, against the Russians, who were destined to be left out of the knock-out rounds. Not since they were the USSR had they done anything else.As it played out, the Dutch look as though they have a real shot at winning the tournament for the first time since 1988, when they won on WEST German soil. The Russians, led by their coach, the miracle worker Guus Hiddink, have emerged as a serious threat since their dismantling by Spain. This pairing is generating serious buzz and should meet the high expectations as both teams desperately want to reach the semifinals, but this was far from the matchup most experts predicted at this stage. That is what makes the European Championships so much fun to watch. Reputations are set aside and two teams playing their best football, approaching each match with energy and abandon, are set to find which one of them is real quality.
I only hope this match is as exciting as it seems it should be..
